With over 100 years of combined experience and a track record of success in high-stakes investigations, we operate as a team — we are solo freelancers. Whether we’re producing a sentencing video, running a focus group, or finding finding a difficult witness and getting them to open up and speak with us. We bring skill, discretion, and grit to every case we take on.
Susan Randall founded VTPrivateye nearly three decades ago and is licensed in Vermont and New York. She has worked on hundreds of civil and criminal cases, including federal and capital defense, and has served as an investigator and mitigation specialist for the Federal Public Defender’s Office. A former journalist and documentary filmmaker, Susan has produced over fifty sentencing and settlement videos. She teaches nationally on mitigation and investigation and is President of the Vermont Association of Investigative and Security Services.
With more than 25 years in Vermont’s criminal justice system, Merry is a seasoned investigator with a background in forensic psychology and counseling. Before joining VTPrivateye, she spent 21 years at Disability Rights Vermont conducting abuse, neglect, and death investigations in correctional and mental health facilities. Merry’s expertise lies in sensitive, complex cases where persistence and compassion are critical.
Nick holds a B.A. in Criminology and Criminal Justice and began at VTPrivateye as an investigative intern before becoming a licensed investigator in Vermont. He has built a reputation for persistence in the field, excellent writing, and strong rapport with witnesses and clients. Nick is also highly skilled in surveillance and brings technical expertise to the team.
Judy brings over 14 years of investigative experience, including service as an FBI Agent in the New York Field Office after graduating from the FBI Academy in Quantico. She holds a J.D. from Vermont Law School and has investigated on both state and federal levels. A Vermont native, Judy is known for her skill in witness interviews, her experience in education and compliance investigations, and her commitment to thorough, ethical fact-finding.
Amaia is a native Vermonter with a master’s degree in forensic psychology and a decade of professional experience on both coasts. Her background includes mental health work, research, media production, and serving as lead researcher for a true crime author. Amaia brings a holistic perspective to investigations and is known for her diligence and care in supporting VTPI clients.
Wyatt Seder-Burnaford graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston College with degrees in English and Political Science, where he led the nationally ranked Mock Trial Program. Licensed as an investigator in 2025, Wyatt is detail-oriented, curious, and skilled at both research and communication.
Fabien Achinda graduated from Middlebury College with a B.A. in Classical Studies and a focus on political philosophy and constitutional law. After interning with VTPrivateye, he joined the team as an analyst, supporting complex investigations with research and critical insights.
